Our History
FALCON are descendants of the Heavy Branch of the Machine Gun Corps, F Company. F Company quickly became F Battalion in Nov 1916, then F Battalion of the Tank Corps, re-designated as 6th Battalion of the Tank Corps in Jan 1918. The unit saw heavy action at the Battle of Messines, Passchendaele, Cambrai and Amiens (using Whippet Mk A light tanks). After the Armistice, the 6th Battalion was disbanded.
In 2001, FALCON Sqn was re-formed to become the 4th Challenger 2 Squadron in the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment. In 2003 the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment deployed under 7th Armoured Brigade, The Desert Rats, providing the spearhead for operations in Iraq during Op TELIC 1. In late 2005, FALCON Sqn became the first interim medium armour Squadron using Scimitar CVR(T) before deploying to BATUS on Ex PRAIRIE STORM in 2006, supporting the Green Jackets light role BG. They also deployed a Troop to Belize in support of the Irish Guards, the first-time armour had deployed to a jungle setting since the late 1970s.
In 2007 FALCON Sqn deployed as an independent sub-unit on Op HERRICK 6 in Afghanistan as the first MASTIFF group and saw its fair share of action as dismounted Troops in Lashkargah, Sangin and FOB Fox. Whilst in theatre, they were a part of all major UK operations in the Sangin Valley area, which included a number of IED strikes. Late 2007 – 2010 saw the Squadron deploy on normal training activities, ranges and BATUS. In 2010 and 2011, the Squadron returned to Afghanistan on Op HERRICK 13 where the Squadron was split operating in Helmand and Kandahar provinces. In 2012 FALCON Sqn was disbanded.
In 2014 FALCON was re-established as FALCON (Area Survey and Reconnaissance) Squadron, providing UK Defence’s only CRN AS&R capability. In 2019, FALCON Squadron came under operational command of 28 Engineer Regiment (C-CBRN) as FALCON Squadron (C-CBRN). FALCON is now a specialist, live agent trained, lightly armoured, all wheeled recce Squadron. In 2018 the Squadron deployed on OP MORLOP in Salisbury in response to the Novichok nerve agent attack, as well as deploying a section plus to Estonia on OP CABRIT 3. In 2019, the Squadron deployed both 13 and 14 Troop to BATUS, to test AS&R alongside a combined arms Battlegroup as well as a Troop to France to conduct Ex TOXIC PATH.
