Officer Training
The regular commissioning course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is 44 weeks long. You will learn how to lead soldiers both on and off the battlefield, developing your physical and mental stamina.
Training at the Academy is challenging but ultimately rewarding. You will leave knowing you have excelled at one of the world’s most revered military training academies.
Following the commissioning parade, you will complete Phase 2 training. As an RTR Officer, you will study Driving & Maintenance, Communication Information Systems, Gunnery and Armoured Tactics. Once you have completed the six-month course, you will be a qualified Challenger 2 troop leader.
The Application Process
The Army Officer Selection Board is the interview process through which you are selected to train at Sandhurst. Once you pass the selection process, you will be offered a place on one of the three intakes that run each year.
If you are interested in being an Officer in the RTR, you should contact the Regimental Secretary to arrange a visit to the Regiment. You can express interest in the Regiment at any time during your application process. However, the earlier you get in touch the more opportunities there will be to visit.
You can visit the Regiment before you start at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. There are also two opportunities to visit during the commissioning course. When visiting the Regiment, you will meet officers and soldiers in their workplace, look inside a Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank and enjoy an evening in the Officers’ Mess. It is the perfect opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the RTR.
While at Sandhurst, you will speak to various regiments and corps to decide where you would like to start your career. The regiments and corps will also decide whether you are suited to the role. You will have the opportunity to be interviewed by two regiments or corps during the Regimental Selection Board process in the intermediate term. If you are successful, you will be offered a place to join The Royal Tank Regiment.
The RTR Officer
As an RTR officer, you will be comfortable working in the high-pressure environment of armoured warfare. Your soldiers will always be your highest priority and you will be confident in your ability to lead them in to battle.
The Regiment is proud of the unique relationship between officers and their troops. Operating a tank requires outstanding team work, your troop will be a close-knit group of passionate soldiers. Your relationship with them will grow through various deployments, social events, and sporting pursuits.
The Regiment recruits officers from all backgrounds. You will be selected based on your character, suitability, and performance during the Commissioning Course.
